New Year's Eve Tar Bar'l Festival: A Motorbike Trip to Allendale's Fiery Tradition

This past New Year's Eve, we craved something different, something real, steeped in tradition - and something that obviously involved the motorbike.

Swapping the usual fireworks and prosecco for a ride in the North Pennines, we headed for Allendale, Northumberland to witness the legendary Tar Bar'l festival. We enjoyed a night full of fire, folklore and unforgettable memories.... (plus, let's be honest, some seriously good lamb burgers).

This Tar Bar'l Festival motorbike trip was one of our most memorable New Year’s Eve adventures yet. The ride through the North Pennines set the tone for a night packed with fire, folklore, and the kind of chaotic charm only Allendale can offer.

The Tar Bar’l Tradition

Arriving in Allendale, we were immediately enveloped by the village's festive atmosphere. Locals and visitors alike gathered in anticipation of the main event. As the clock neared 11:30 PM, 45 men—known as "guisers"—donned in vibrant costumes and soot-covered faces, hoisted flaming whisky barrels atop their heads. These barrels, filled with tar, sawdust, and kindling, blazed against the dark sky as the guisers paraded through the streets, led by a brass band playing spirited tunes.

The procession culminated at the village square, where a massive bonfire awaited. One by one, the guisers hurled their fiery burdens onto the pile, igniting an inferno that lit up the night. The crowd erupted in cheers, shouting the traditional phrase, “Be damned to he who throws last!

A Night to Remember

Standing amidst the crowd, the warmth of the fire contrasting the crisp night air, we felt a profound connection to the community and its enduring traditions.

The Ride Home

As the bonfire died down and the crowd drifted away, we geared up for the ride home. The Northumberland roads were empty, the stars were crystal clear, and the only sound was the soft purr of the bike engine.

Reflecting on the night, we realised we'd just experienced something you won't find in any city square: a real celebration, built on centuries-old tradition and pure community spirit.

Tips for Fellow Idiots (and Sensible Riders):

  • Arrive Early: Parking in Allendale is limited and fills up fast.

  • Dress Warm: Thermals, good gloves, and heated grips if you've got them.

  • Stay Sober: Riding back after midnight in winter is adventure enough without adding booze.

The Allendale Tar Bar’l isn’t just a festival — it’s a living, breathing celebration of history, community, and good old-fashioned chaos.

If you’re looking for alternative New Year ideas and you’ve got the bike ready to roll, stick this one on your list.
