Getting off the ferry in Ireland felt like stepping off a plane. Even though it was early evening, the heat hit us hard — the good kind though, like the start of something great.
We were finally here! Just a small matter of a 3-hour ride to our accommodation, with half a sat nav screen to guide us. What could possibly go wrong?
To be fair, the sat nav kind of held up, and we made it there… eventually. We weren't exactly sure which building was ours, and ringing the host at midnight probably wasn’t high on her list of ideal wake-up calls, but she was lovely (even half asleep). The Airbnb turned out to be a gem — another bargain with coffee on the go while we did a rough itinerary for the next day.
Morning came (too quickly), and off we went to Ireland BikeFest in Killarney. There was a huge build-up of traffic as we neared the town — turns out thousands of other bikers had the same idea. Who knew?
The whole area had a festival buzz: live music, food trucks, beer tents, families, and wall-to-wall bikes. Some of them looked like they’d never seen a puddle, never mind salt or 30,000 miles of abuse like ours.
Still, we fit right in. A bit of dancing, chatting to fellow bikers, and consuming the most expensive burger and curry chips known to man — it was all part of the fun.
The Wild Atlantic Way – The Dream Ride
Fed and festival’d out, we headed off to ride some of the Wild Atlantic Way — and wow. Just wow. The roads were beyond amazing. It felt like we were riding through scenes from Lord of the Rings or King Kong — dramatic cliffs, winding roads, waves crashing in the distance.
This part of the trip was what the Wild Atlantic Way motorcycle road trip is all about — immense scenery, open roads, and a real sense of freedom.
We passed through Valentia Isle and saw a sign for dinosaur footprints just 15 minutes away. Obviously, we had to go. When in Ireland, right?
Rewriting the Route
On the ride back, we had a decision to make: wait around for more BikeFest fun the next day, or get an early start and explore more of the South Coast on a scenic trip back to the ferry. Can you guess which we chose?
